Practical advice to avoid offence, I think it will be interesting to investigate some of the ideas further than what is offered here, which, though a valuable list of do’s and don’ts, doesn’t explore ‘whys’ as much.
finally… a break through!
25 04 2008Though I have not yet been able to read this paper properly, and although its a masters thesis and not an academic reference, this paper explores a really relevant line of enquiery so if nothing else, the bibliography will be extremely useful.
Its called PARTICIPATORY DOCUMENTARY-MAKING WITH INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES IN ARGENTINA: LESSONS LEARNT
The really comforting thing about finding this one is that I had come across many of the articles in my searches and had saved them as possible interests.
Today I’ve also managed to find articles exploring the different modes of documentary making (welcome back Bill Nichols), especially the problems with Voice of God in anthopological observational films. There’s no question in my mind that this approach is really problematic, as is the participatory form as I don’t really think it’s my place to get involved in the action of the story. Ineractive… not really, and self-reflexive? nope. The problem with Nichols is that I think its too narrow. Either I go observational or I become involved, and there are problems with both.
In my searches I have been searching for cases of Indigenous and non-Indigenous collaboration on media production, though this is not to ignor the similar types of community collaboration needed with the Jewish community for this project, however, my hunch is that there will be more written on representation of Indigenous peoples in media. I believe at this stage that the findings would relate to any producers and communities involved in media projects.

Interesting reference
25 04 2008Though unfortunately I have no real use for this article as far as I can see, its discussion of the use of digital media as a clearer representation of Indigenous narratives which are often ordered in a networked way is really facinating.

From GetUp
Featuring Kev Carmody, Paul Kelly, Urthboy, Missy Higgins, Mia Dyson, Ozi Batla, Pat Dodson, and John Butler and the voices of Kevin Rudd and Paul Keating and more, this clip joins a proud tradition of achieving positive change through music. All profits raised by the song will go to our Reconciliation Fund and Aboriginal organisations on the ground. Help take our message to a new audience who we need to join us on this national journey, by clicking here to view and buy the song:

Now that we have the momentum of the Apology and the 2020 Summit, let’s take that mandate to achieve an independent and truly reconciled nation. What better way to do that than send it straight to number one on the charts? The track only costs $1.69, but please feel free to donate as much as you feel appropriate. We’ll also play the song at next week’s Reconciliation GetTogethers.
The song, the process, the politics and the social movement makes my skin tingle!

18 04 2008Am starting to think I may be a little ambitious with my vision of creating a sonic browser like interface, (over-estimating possibilities? me…!??) but this seems to be a website full of tantalising tutorials about interactive sound… may have to wait until after I finish my essay though…

Broadcasting via Podcasts
12 04 2008For weeks now people have been finding my site via the World Nomads podcast competition site and wanting to hear my entry (recieved an Honourable Mention, pity, I really would have enjoyed a trip to Cambodia!) and have found the link to be defunct. Sorry to all those people, but I have now finally found a podcast host I’m happy with and moved the file to them. I have also put a link to my podcast site in the blogroll, but I will have to do some trawling to find projects that I’m both a) still comfortable with as many were done in 1st and 2nd year, and b) own the rights to publish as many include interview with Indigenous people who then own the rights to their words and would need to be consulted if I decided I wanted to post them up.

Synergy
11 04 2008I’ve been mulling over the name of the Project over the past few days. I realised that there are link between the content the documentary and the practices I want to explore and they are: cross-cultural collaboration and partnerships towards kinds of activism. Clearly, William Cooper’s act of protest(s) against Jewish persecution was a strong embodyment of these notions, and our cross-cultural partnership in telling this story is also reflective of his aims.
When I wrote the initial proposal I had to come up with a working title, which was ‘In the Wake of Genocide’ though I wasn’t all that comfortable with the limits it set.
Looking for words around the theme of collaboration I came across ’synergy’ which means “the interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects, OR,
Cooperative interaction among groups that creates an enhanced combined effect.”
I think I have a new working title…
